Trenton Housing Authority Receives $250K HUD Grant for Health and Safety Improvements

TRENTON, NJ (October 12, 2021) The Trenton Housing Authority (THA) has announced today that it has received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to make capital improvements to enhance safety and security for residents of the public housing developments the THA maintains in the city of Trenton.

The funds are awarded through HUD’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program, which supports public housing authorities as they address the safety of public housing residents. These grants may be used to install, repair, or replace capital equipment or systems that contribute to a safer living environment for residents, including security systems/surveillance cameras, fencing, lighting systems, emergency alarm systems, window bars, deadbolt locks, doors, and carbon monoxide detectors.

“The Trenton Housing Authority would like to U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman, and the entire HUD team for the $250,000 Emergency Safety and Security Grant Award,” said Jelani Garrett, Executive Director of the THA. “The THA is committed to creating safe, quality, affordable housing opportunities to the communities we serve and this grant will greatly assist our efforts to provide a safer living environment for our residents here in Trenton.”

“Families who live in public housing deserve to be safe in their homes,” said Deputy Secretary Todman. “These grants help ensure the health and safety of public housing residents so they can go about living their everyday lives peacefully without having to worry about having a secure place to call home.”

HUD added the purchase and installation of carbon monoxide detectors as an eligible cost under the Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program in FY 2019, recognizing the need for specific funding for this purpose. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of fuel-fired combustion appliances, such as furnaces and water heaters. If not properly vented, this undetectable gas can be dangerous and even deadly.

During this phase, we confirm your eligibility with a series of background questions so we can place you on the list for one of our communities.

Complete your full application

When you are at the top of the housing list, we work with you to confirm all HUD and THA eligibility factors. All adult family members living in household must complete personal declaration and information release forms. Then you get to meet with THA staff to review, finalize and sign your application. Once you’re approved, we can schedule your move in!
